Topotheque Design Studio along with Fab Lab Ioannina designed and fabricated a geodesic dome in collaboration with Tzoumakers, an open-source collective of local farmers from the Tzoumerka region in northern Greece. 

The built structure was the outcome of a four-day open Source Agricultural Workshop which was organized by P2P Lab for the Distributed Design Market Platform

The workshop reviewed the vernacular construction techniques and materials of nomads' shacks in the Pindos mountain range and introduced participants to the structural qualities of geodesic domes in order to create a synthesis of both: a hack of the dome tailored to the capabilities of the collective.

Additionally, the workshop included lectures on the concept of open-source communities and knowledge sharing as well as tutorials on parametric design. 

The majority of the participants were members of the collective who have big experience working with wood and metal but have little access to resources and are not familiar with digital tools.

The objective was to employ digital design tools to combine vernacular know-how which participants were familiar with, with contemporary design and fabrication tools.

Through the construction of a geodesic dome in 1:5 and then in 1:1 scale, the participants were able to familiarize with the modern technological means and to experience issues relating both with file-to-factory (off-site fabrication) processes but also work collaboratively in solving construction sequence problems.

At its first iteration the workshop focused an investigation of the local morphology of the dome rather than its global geometry which remained regular. Special emphasis was given to the design and manufacturing of the dome’s nodes through the combined use of parametric design, digital fabrication (CNC Milling, Laser cutting) use of traditional analog tools and prototypes. 

The outcome of the workshop was the specific type of node which the participants can creatively hack and then replicate the self-supporting structure for their own purposes ( i.e. creation of barn)
